A Guide to DIY Lip Balm

Dry, chapped lips? Skip the store-bought balms loaded with chemicals and whip up your own nourishing concoction at home! DIY lip balm is surprisingly easy to make, fun to customize, and a great way to pamper your pout with natural ingredients.

Gather Your Supplies:

Base Ingredients:

You'll need a blend of solid and liquid oils to create a smooth and effective balm. Popular choices include beeswax (for structure), shea butter (for deep moisturization), coconut oil (for smooth application), and sweet almond oil (for extra nourishment).

Sweeteners (Optional):

A touch of honey or maple syrup adds a hint of sweetness and helps bind the ingredients.

Flavor Boost (Optional):

Essential oils like peppermint, lavender, or vanilla create a delightful scent and can offer additional benefits (peppermint for a tingling sensation, lavender for relaxation).

Containers:

Repurpose old lip balm tubes or tins, or invest in empty containers online.

DIY Magic:

The Double Boiler Method:

This is the safest way to melt your ingredients. A few inches of water should be added to a pot and brought to a simmer. Place a heat-resistant bowl on top, ensuring it doesn't touch the water. Add your beeswax, shea butter, and carrier oils to the bowl and stir gently until melted and well combined.

Microwave Method (Caution!):

If short on time, you can use the microwave on low power (50% heat) in short bursts (10-15 seconds) to melt your beeswax and carrier oils. Stir well after each interval to prevent overheating.

Sweetness & Spice:

Once your base is melted, remove it from heat and let it cool slightly. Here's where you can get creative! Add a touch of honey or maple syrup for sweetness, and 2-3 drops of your favorite essential oil for scent (be sure to choose lip-safe ones!).

Fill & Chill:

Carefully pour your concoction into your containers, leaving a little space at the top for settling. Pop them in the refrigerator for 20-30 minutes to solidify completely.

Pro-Tips:

Customize your balm! Add a pinch of dried calendula petals for a touch of color or a drop of vitamin E oil for extra antioxidant power.

Put the ingredients and date on the labels of your creations.

Keep your lip balm somewhere dry and cold. Generally, DIY lip balms have a shelf life of 3-6 months.
